Health Minister pledges support for Ireland to save lives: Wash your hands
The purpose of the launch was to strengthen the commitment of Member States concerned all over the world in patient safety and the critical role of hand hygiene to control the spread of health care-associated infections and multiresistant pathogens.Dr. James Reilly, Minister of Health today (Thursday, May 5, 2011) has reaffirmed its support for the day of hand hygiene.
Health care-associated infections is a major problem in patient safety as it affects millions of people worldwide and complicates the delivery of patient care. Infections contribute to patient’s death or disability, promote resistance and generate additional costs to those already incurred by the illness of the patients behind.
To combat the spread of healthcare-associated infections, which take a heavy toll in human lives and affect hundreds of millions of patients worldwide each year, WHO and its partners launched the Global Patient Safety in patients with the theme Clean Care is safer care on Thursday, October 13, 2005. As part of the launch of the guidelines on hand hygiene in health care (Advanced Draft) were made available.
The minister stressed that although there have been a decline of 40percent of welcome in the number of cases reported between 2006 and 2009 can not be complacent. The recent outbreak of the CRE in the Midwest demonstrates the need for constant vigilance and attention to the threat posed by antibiotic resistance and nosocomial infections.
The Minister has promised the support of Ireland to implement measures to reduce nosocomial infections and to share results and learning internationally. The Minister said: Poor hygiene standards puts lives at risk, we must all do our part to dramatically improve standards of hygiene in hospitals need to buy to improve the world – the hospital staff in all areas and visitors aim hands clean, clean . This is an achievable goal and will be a priority for health services.
